The course introduces to the theory of Western music, providing the basis for further study of music, both from a theoretical and practical point of view: rudiments of music, musical analysis, performance, and aural skills. The course aims to develop an understanding of music as it evolved in the Western world and to support the use of creative and critical thinking. Students will demonstrate their achievement of this outcome during class discussions, by submitting written responses both from in-class listening and out-of-class assignments and reports, and through their answers on examinations.
By the end of the semester the student will be able to:
· demonstrate ability to analyze music heard or seen in a score: identifying harmony, melody, texture, rhythm and meter, and form,
· understand, identify, analyze, make perceptions about, describe, and/or compare pieces of music in a variety of structures and styles,
· apply techniques of critical analysis for appreciation and understanding the different historical music periods, move from learning facts to making critically reasoned judgments grounded in the academic content of the class,
· compose a piece of music in abstract meaning in ternary form that will last at least one minute in performance using traditional and/or neoteric sounds and notation so others could perform the piece without hearing a taped performance.
